5 Why

5 Why

5 Why, also know as 5 Why Analysis or Root Cause Analysis, is the Japanese problem-solving technique to determine the root cause or source of the problem.

It is based on the concept of treating the root causes and not just the symptoms of the problem.

This technique helps identify the underlying the root cause of the problem by repeatedly asking “Why” at least five times. Hence the name 5 Why. Although you can continue asking more Why questions till you get to the root cause or stop before five if you arrive at the root cause.

Each of the Why questions the answer from the previous Why and try to get to the next level causes. A single problem can have multiple causes and the 5 Why analysis will follow each of these cause by further drilling down each such cause by asking Why. When used correctly, 5 Why analysis helps you to identify and fix the real reasons behind a problem and eliminate them from the root.
